Hello I have no relation to the people in the incident but have lived in SF and coincidentally know that area of hayes Valley from work and play.
I am sorry so much for the pain this has caused.
I am not really good at saying any other way but that yes the victim was killed because of passion or "passions" felt by the perpatrator. That said he seems to have planned a bit and also "knew" the victims habits either by observation or some 2nd hand verifiable meaning truthful knowledge. Either posted a profile made a call and then lye in wait.
What is obvious is the military type attack of knife wounds shows that he(most likely-or contracted) goes for the jugular as the cliche that is so true.
Then it's yank computer, or fish for his phone until he's delerious and no help to himself. Then departs back way.
You if really need to solve only look for any and all persons INVOLVED in vics life that have military.
Cheers

I think it was the boyfriend or husband of someone he messed around with. I am surprised that these avenues did not seem to be pursued.

The French investigative unit discovered foreign DNA on Mr. De la Plaza's broken watch. WHY hasn't this sample been entered into CODIS???

I saw the 48 hours mystery segment on this case yéars ago. I couldn't understand why they deemed this a suicide. And I still can't. I was again thinking about this case just now because I stumbled upon this 48 hours mystery segement on youtube. It's sad there still is no justice in this case. I seriously believe he was murdered and his killer got away with it so far. I feel sorry for his family who has to live with this. Very painful, very hurtful, very frustrating.
